Hidden behind the imposing architecture of the TU Berlin campus, lies Villa Bell. It’s a quiet survivor, a whisper from a vanished era. Villa Bell is actually two houses joined together. It stands as the last vestige of a once-grand residential neighborhood that lined the former Sophienstraße. Imagine elegant villas, bustling with life, lining this street. World War II brought devastation. Bombs rained down, shattering the peace and leaving the area in ruins. Most of the villas on Sophienstraße, later renamed Bellstraße, were destroyed. But Villa Bell remained. It stands as a poignant reminder of what once was. In 1950, the street was renamed Bellstraße, honoring Alexander Graham Bell. Ironically, the street itself disappeared in 1963, absorbed into the expanding TU campus. Today, Villa Bell serves the university in various roles. It houses a daycare center, administrative offices, and a café. Since 2012, it has also been home to the Gerhard-Ertl-Center for Catalysis Research, blending history with cutting-edge science. Surrounding Villa Bell are the institutes and departments of the TU Berlin. Architecture, heating and air conditioning technology, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, telecommunication systems, machine systems, electron microscopy, and mathematics all have a place here. Villa Bell sits quietly amidst this hive of activity, a tangible link to Berlin’s past.
