The imposing Villa Battelle stands before you a testament to Geneva’s rich history. This isn’t just any building. It’s the heart of what was once the Battelle Institute Geneva a pioneering research center.

Established in 1952 the Institute was a European branch of the renowned Battelle Memorial Institute founded in the United States in 1929. The Institute’s goal was simple to put scientific discoveries and technological advancements at the service of humanity. Post-World War II it chose Geneva for its second European location participating in the ambitious reconstruction efforts of the Marshall Plan.

The Institute acquired a significant property in Carouge. An 18th-century manor house already stood there. It became the central hub for researchers beginning in 1953. Architect Georges Addor masterminded the site’s development. He oversaw construction of the first laboratory building in 1953-54. This was just the start of a building boom.

Several more buildings followed. Building C was constructed between 1957 and 1958. Building A a versatile structure housing laboratories offices a library cafeteria and a conference room opened in 1960. It symbolized the Institute’s peak success. Building D an exclusively office building was designed between 1966 and 1969. The planned 500-seat underground auditorium connecting Buildings A and D was never built. Building F the final major addition completed in 1972 marked the end of an era.

Unfortunately economic downturn and increased competition gradually slowed the Institute’s activities. The staff was reduced and the extensive premises became increasingly underutilized. The Institute sold the property and buildings to the state of Geneva in 2001. Today the University of Geneva and the Geneva School of Management occupy the former Institute. The once vibrant hub of scientific innovation is now a center for education.

The main building Building A houses the University’s computer center and a FabLab. Building D accommodates interfaculty centers and the Institute of Environmental Sciences. The original Villa Battelle now houses employees from the Faculty of Sciences’ mathematics department. Its story however remains a significant chapter in Geneva’s history.
