Hidden in the heart of Portugal, the village of Vilar do Torno e Alentém whispers tales of time. Vilar do Torno e Alentém is more than just a picturesque village. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of history, faith, and the enduring spirit of its people. Originally, Vilar do Torno e Alentém consisted of two separate entities: the parish of Santa Maria de Vilar do Torno and the smaller Alentém. In 1834, these two communities merged, their stories intertwining to form the Vilar do Torno e Alentém we know today. The church of Santa Maria de Vilar do Torno stands as a silent witness to centuries of faith. It was once an abbey, its appointments overseen by the local diocese. This church has seen the ebb and flow of religious authority, transitioning from the Diocese of Braga to the Diocese of Porto in 1882. Vilar do Torno e Alentém has also seen its population shift over the years. In 2001, the population was 1,447. By the 2011 census, that number had dropped slightly to 1,342. This small community, nestled within the municipality of Lousada, has a rich history woven into the fabric of Portugal. Vilar do Torno e Alentém invites you to step back in time and discover its hidden gems.
