What became of Vilar de Figos? This place was once a distinct Portuguese parish within Barcelos. It held its own identity. Vilar de Figos spanned 4.83 square kilometers. In 2011, it was home to 604 residents. That’s a population density of about 125 people per square kilometer.

But time brings changes. In 2013, a national administrative reform occurred. Vilar de Figos ceased to exist as an independent parish. It joined with Milhazes and Faria. Together, they formed a new parish. This new entity is called União das Freguesias de Milhazes, Vilar de Figos e Faria. Milhazes serves as its headquarters.

Let’s look back at Vilar de Figos’ population. In 1864, it had 413 inhabitants. By 1911, that number had grown to 479. The population peaked in 1930 at 702. Then, it gradually declined. In 2001, there were 641 residents. By 2011, the population stood at 604 before its extinction as a parish.

Vilar de Figos may no longer be on the map as it once was. Its history remains. It is part of the larger União das Freguesias. The spirit of Vilar de Figos lives on.
