High on a 427m outcrop Vila Real commands a view. King Dinis granted Vila Real its first royal charter in 1289. This charter allowed its inhabitants to refuse hospitality to nobility. Knights had to find shelter outside the walls. Despite this many noble families settled in Vila Real. Their residences became part of the city.

Vila Real became the capital of the Vila Real District and the historic province of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Vila Real was created in 1922. Vila Real gained city status in 1925. It was the fourth Portuguese city with public electricity. It was the first to produce hydroelectric power. This happened from 1894 to 1926 at the Biel Hydroelectric Power Plant. It is near the Corgo River.

The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro was established in 1986. This contributed to population growth and revitalization. The city’s development continues. It focuses on health education and tourism. Vila Real is an attractive place for foreign investment. It is internationally known for the Vila Real International Automobile Circuit. This is the street circuit used for the FIA WTCR Race of Portugal.
