Until the early 19th century, Aboim was part of the Couto de Aboim e Codeçoso. Between 1837 and 1853, it integrated into the Celorico de Basto municipality.

The name Aboim may have Germanic roots. It could come from the Low Latin Villa Abolini. This means the farm of Abolino. Abolino may derive from the personal name Abolunis or Abulinus. These names link to figures like the Lombard king Alboin. The variants Aboinha and Boím are also related. The surname Alvim shares this origin.
