What’s in a name? Vila Boa do Bispo, a charming village nestled in the heart of Portugal, holds the answer. Vila Boa do Bispo got its name in a rather unique way. It was February 12, 1141, when King Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, visited this blessed land. Struck by its abundant fertility, he declared it “Vila Boa,” meaning “Good Village.” But the story doesn’t end there. The region was also closely tied to Bishop Sisnando of Porto. The Bishop, a revered figure, spent his final years in Vila Boa do Bispo, leaving an indelible mark on its history. And so, the village became known as Vila Boa do Bispo – “Good Village of the Bishop.” The village is also home to the magnificent Monastery of Saint Mary of Vila Boa do Bispo, a testament to its rich past. The original structure dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries, with intriguing Romanesque features. You can still see two blind arcades that flank the main portal, hinting at its medieval grandeur. Inside the monastery, look for the evidence of its Baroque reinvention– a blend of artistry and history. The Monastery stands as a silent sentinel, echoing with tales of faith and power, a must-see for any visitor seeking to unravel the layers of time in Vila Boa do Bispo. Take your time to wander through the village, soak in its peaceful atmosphere, and imagine the echoes of its past.
