Did the walls of Viktoria-Kaserne ever whisper secrets? I wonder, as we stand before this imposing structure in Hamburg’s Altona-Nord. Viktoria-Kaserne. A name that echoes with a fascinating and complex past. Built between 1878 and 1883 for the Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 31, it quickly became a prominent landmark. The “Viktoria-Kaserne”, named after a nearby street, originally housed soldiers, officers, and the military administration. It boasted various utility buildings, a detention facility, an officers’ mess, vehicle sheds, and even a laundry. After the November Revolution of 1918, the Viktoria-Kaserne transitioned from military use to a police headquarters. From 1923 to 1937, it served as the headquarters for the Altona-Wandsbek police department. A darker chapter unfolded during the National Socialist era. The police prison within Viktoria-Kaserne held political opponents. For a time, the main building became the central office of the Gestapo for Schleswig-Holstein. The former riding and drill hall, which still stands today, played a somber role in October 1938 as an assembly point for the deportation of Polish Jews. After 1945, Viktoria-Kaserne continued to serve the community, housing police, social welfare authorities, and university facilities. Today, Viktoria-Kaserne has been transformed into a vibrant hub for art, creativity, production, education, and neighborhood development by the “fux eG” cooperative. Over thirty outdoor panels chronicle the building’s multifaceted history, from the German Empire to the Weimar Republic and the National Socialist period. The “denkXmal” stairwell exhibition, opened in 2020, offers an artistic reappraisal of the barracks’ history. Murals and explanatory texts invite reflection on themes of coercion and solidarity, authoritarianism and emancipation. Viktoria-Kaserne stands as a testament to the enduring power of transformation. From military might to police headquarters, from a place of oppression to a center for creativity, Viktoria-Kaserne has witnessed and absorbed the ebb and flow of history. Its walls may indeed whisper secrets, if only we listen closely.
