Isn’t it amazing that these Viking ships once sailed the seas? Today we stand before the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde. It is Denmark’s national ship museum. Its focus is on ships from the prehistoric and medieval periods.
The Viking Ship Museum displays five original Viking ships. These are the Skuldelev ships. They were excavated nearby in 1962. The museum also researches maritime history. It educates researchers in marine and experimental archaeology. Academic conferences are held here. There is also a research library.
Around 1070, five Viking ships were sunk at Skuldelev. This was in Roskilde Fjord. It blocked the fairway. It protected Roskilde from sea attack. These became known as the Skuldelev ships. They are five different types of ships. They range from cargo to warships.
