Picture this A sprawling vineyard in the heart of Milan. This is Vigna Nuova. More than just a vineyard it’s a piece of history. It’s where Leonardo da Vinci once cultivated grapes. A gift from Ludovico Sforza. The Duke of Milan gave it to Leonardo as a token of gratitude. It was a gesture of appreciation for Leonardo’s “various and marvelous works” for the Duke. This wasn’t random. Leonardo came from a family of winemakers. Wine was one of his many passions.

Vigna Nuova thrived. It stretched from here almost to Porta Romana. It encompassed about 8000 square meters. Leonardo cherished this vineyard. It was a link to Milan. He fiercely fought to regain it when the French seized it during their invasion. Even in his will he didn’t forget it. He left it to his loyal servant and his apprentice.

Imagine the scent of grapes ripening under the Milanese sun. Think of Leonardo himself amongst the vines. He was painting The Last Supper nearby at Santa Maria delle Grazie. He probably walked through the vineyard during breaks. A moment of respite from his artistic endeavors. The vineyard survived. It withstood urban transformations. Amazingly it remained intact for centuries.

The vineyard’s secret was recently rediscovered. The grape variety is Malvasia di Candia Aromatica. This ancient Greek grape was popular in the 16th century. The vineyard’s rebirth came with Expo 2015. The Foundation Portaluppi and the owners of Casa degli Atellani brought it back to life. Experts used DNA analysis to identify the original grape. The Vigna Nuova story is one of resilience. It’s also a tale of rediscovery. It’s a testament to Leonardo’s legacy and Milan’s rich history. So stand here. Breathe in the air. Let the past surround you. You are in Vigna Nuova. A piece of history reborn.
