Clutching a handful of lire, Enzo Bearzot, the legendary Italian football manager, strolled through Vigentino. He was searching for a moment of peace amidst the bustling transformation of his beloved neighborhood. Vigentino, once a quiet agricultural commune, had become part of Milan in 1923. By the mid-20th century, it was rapidly urbanizing. Apartment blocks sprang up, replacing fields and farms. Bearzot often reflected on how Vigentino got its name. It stemmed from “viginti,” the Latin word for “twenty,” marking its location on the ancient road from Milan to Pavia. He pictured weary travelers stopping at this point, twenty miles from their destination.

Vigentino held a special place in Bearzot’s heart. He lived here for years, witnessing its evolution firsthand. He frequented the local shops and markets along Via Ripamonti, Vigentino’s bustling main street. He enjoyed the relative tranquility compared to the city center, yet he was only a short tram ride away on line 24. He often mused on the stark contrast between the modern apartments and the lingering remnants of Vigentino’s rural past. He could still picture the old naphtha depot and foundry, remnants of its early industrial days. He remembered when Officine Meccaniche, the car manufacturer, and Centrale del Latte di Milano, the dairy factory, were major employers in the area. Now, those industries were gone, replaced by a residential landscape.

One day, Bearzot discovered a hidden gem amidst the changing landscape of Vigentino: the Cortili di Via Matera. This unique neighborhood, built on the site of a former industrial depot, offered a welcome respite. He wandered through the courtyards, admiring the mix of houses, offices, and the Teatro del Vigentino. He learned that Milan’s Tourism Office recognized these courtyards as one of the 100 most important in the city. This place became his sanctuary, a place to reflect and escape the urban hustle. Even in its transformed state, Vigentino held onto its historical roots. The church of Santa Maria al Paradiso, where Bearzot’s funeral would eventually be held, stood as a testament to the enduring spirit of this unique Milanese district. He often thought about how Vigentino, despite its challenges with social issues and environmental concerns, retained a distinct character. The blend of old and new, rural and urban, created a unique atmosphere. It was this unique blend that made Vigentino, his Vigentino, a place worth remembering.
