View Florianturm

Built in 1959, the View Florianturm was originally the tallest structure in Germany. It was designed by architect Will Schwarz for the first Federal Garden Show held in Dortmund’s Westfalenpark. The View Florianturm isn’t just a pretty face. It serves as a telecommunications tower, transmitting TV and radio signals. The View Florianturm was named after Saint Florian, patron saint of gardeners. This choice seems fitting. The tower stands amidst the lush greenery of Westfalenpark, a vibrant testament to the beauty of flora. A revolving restaurant, the first of its kind in the world, sits high above, offering panoramic views of the city. Imagine enjoying a meal as the city lights twinkle below you, a breathtaking spectacle courtesy of the View Florianturm. Initially, this marvel reached a height of 219.6 meters. After an antenna replacement in 2004, it now stands at 208.56 meters. The View Florianturm has undergone several renovations, including a major refurbishment between 1996 and 1998 to update safety standards. For a brief period, there was even a bungee jumping platform at the top. Sadly, a fatal accident in 2003 led to its closure and eventual removal in 2008. Even a concrete giant like the View Florianturm isn’t impervious to time. In 2006, falling concrete chunks necessitated repairs and temporary closure. More recently, in 2011, the View Florianturm underwent extensive renovations to its concrete facade, costing 1.5 million euros. Today, the View Florianturm continues to watch over Dortmund, a symbol of the city’s resilience and ingenuity.
