Consider this: over one hundred thousand Vietnamese Catholics lost their lives for their faith. These are the Vietnamese Martyrs. This church behind me honors their sacrifice. It stands as a testament to their unwavering devotion. The Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church is more than just a building. It is a symbol of resilience.

This parish in San Antonio is named for 117 Vietnamese Martyrs. Pope John Paul II canonized them in 1988. Their feast day is November 24th. These martyrs represent countless Catholics. They were murdered for their faith in Vietnam over centuries.

Many parishioners here are refugees. They or their families fled Communist persecution after the fall of Saigon. One parishioner, Luat, escaped Vietnam by boat in 1975. A U.S. merchant ship rescued him and his family. He says Catholicism and Communism are incompatible.

Luat also says their church is named after their ancestors. These ancestors died for their religion. Therefore their belief is strong. The Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church is a beacon of faith for this community.

The church’s history reflects the journey of its people. Initially a small group of refugees, the community grew. They first met at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Arlington. Eventually, they numbered 450 families. The diocese then allowed them to establish their own church.

Their first church was a converted Food Lion grocery store. The community continued to expand. After 13 years, they had 1200 families. They built a new church. Parishioners generously donated to the 7-million-dollar project. Each family gave about $3,000.

The Vietnamese roots are reflected in the church’s design. It features a 75-foot bell tower. The altar, statues, walls, and floors incorporate 750,000 pounds of granite and marble. This material came from Vietnam. Outside stands a six-foot statue of the Blessed Mother with the infant Jesus.

The Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church is a vibrant community. It is home to many active ministries. The church has more than 1,000 children in its faith formation program. Services are primarily in Vietnamese. However, the youth Mass is offered in both English and Vietnamese.

Luat emphasizes the importance of faith. He says in this country you have everything. Why abandon what you believe? Why abandon God? He believes they not only keep their faith but also strive to be role models as Catholics.

Nathan Pham, another parishioner, echoes this sentiment. He says they have a Vietnamese history with 117 martyrs. These martyrs are their role models. They honor them weekly.

The Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church stands as a powerful symbol. It represents faith, resilience, and community. It reminds us of the sacrifices made for religious freedom. It is a place where Vietnamese Americans celebrate their heritage and faith.
