Did you know that Da Nang’s history stretches back to the ancient kingdom of Champa? Imagine Da Nang as it was in 192 AD. The Chams established their kingdom. Their influence once stretched from Hue to Vung Tau. Indrapura was the capital of Champa. It stood about 50 km from Da Nang. That was from 875 to about 1000 AD.

Da Nang is now a major city in Vietnam. It lies on the coast of the South China Sea. It sits at the mouth of the Han River. Da Nang is one of Vietnam’s most important port cities. It is under the central government’s administration.

Let’s step back to the times of Western contact. One of the first Europeans to visit Da Nang was António de Faria. He was a Portuguese explorer. He anchored here in 1535. Portuguese ships began calling regularly at Hoi An.

Da Nang later became known as Tourane during French colonial rule. In 1847, French vessels bombarded Da Nang. They claimed it was because of the persecution of Roman Catholic missionaries. In 1858, French troops landed in Da Nang. This marked the start of the Cochinchina Campaign. The French overpowered the Vietnamese. They occupied the city and the Tien Sa peninsula. The Vietnamese army forced them to retreat.

Da Nang played a big role in the Vietnam War. Da Nang International Airport was a major air base. It served the South Vietnamese and United States Air Forces. It became one of the world’s busiest aircraft hubs.

On March 29 and 30, 1975, communist forces captured Da Nang. This marked a crucial point in the war. North Vietnam conquered South Vietnam.

Since then, Da Nang has grown. It is now a major urban center. It is known for its education and economy. Da Nang is the commercial and educational center of Central Vietnam.

Da Nang’s name has changed over time. It may come from the Cham word “da nak”. This means “opening of a large river.” The French called it Tourane. This name came from “Cua Han”. That means “mouth of the Han River”.

Today, Da Nang is a vibrant city. It has a rich history and culture. It is famous for its beautiful beaches and scenery. The Dragon Bridge is a modern icon. The Han River flows through the city.
