Initially housed in the Cau Giay Art Sector the orchestra comprised 114 musicians. A choir of 120 singers joined in 1961 forming the Vietnam National Opera Symphony Orchestra. Ballet dancers took the stage in 1964 expanding the ensemble to the Vietnam National Opera Ballet Symphony. The Symphony Orchestra became a separate entity in 1985 leaving the present-day Vietnam National Opera & Ballet.
