The Vietnam – Germany Hospital, originally founded in 1904 as part of the Indochina Medical College, has witnessed over a century of transformation. Established by the French colonial governor, Paul Doumer, it initially bore no resemblance to the state-of-the-art facility we see today. Over the years, the Vietnam – Germany Hospital has been known by various names, reflecting the changing political landscape of Vietnam. It was once called Yersin Hospital, then the Hospital of Vietnam – GDR Friendship, before finally adopting its current name. The renowned Vietnamese surgeon, Ton That Tung, dedicated over 40 years of his career to this very hospital, conducting groundbreaking research and performing countless life-saving operations. Today, the Vietnam – Germany Hospital stands as the largest surgical center in Vietnam. With over 500 beds and 18 surgery rooms, it performs a remarkable 800 open-heart surgeries every year. The hospital also participates in international exchange and training programs, collaborating with medical facilities in countries like France, Germany, and Australia. This global partnership allows for a constant exchange of knowledge and expertise, ensuring that the Vietnam – Germany Hospital remains at the forefront of medical innovation. In 2006, the hospital received a generous donation of new equipment worth over US$160,000 from the Hans Messer Foundation, in partnership with East Meets West Foundation and Dräger. This donation significantly enhanced the hospital’s capacity for children’s surgery. The Vietnam – Germany Hospital has also played a pivotal role in advancing craniofacial surgery in Vietnam, collaborating with the UK charity, Facing the World, to train Vietnamese surgeons and provide essential equipment. The Vietnam – Germany Hospital stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and dedication. It’s a place where lives are saved, futures are restored, and hope is rekindled.
