Behold the Vier Tageszeiten statue. These aren’t just four figures. They are a journey through time. A story etched in sandstone.

The Vier Tageszeiten statue stands proudly in Chemnitz’s Schlossteichpark. Created by the artist Johannes Schilling it’s a remarkable piece of art. Completed in 1868 it wasn’t always here. Originally the statues graced Dresden’s Brühl’s Terrace. Imagine them there commanding attention.

The original sandstone sculptures suffered from weathering. They were replaced in Dresden by bronze casts in 1908. But the originals found a new home. In 1898 King Albert gifted them to Chemnitz. They initially stood near the Petrikirche. Later they adorned a fountain on the Theaterplatz.

Their journey continued. The Vier Tageszeiten statue finally arrived at its current location. It was part of a redesign of the Schlossteichpark in 1936. The figures have endured. They’ve faced vandalism and restoration. They’ve been protected by glass covers during harsh winters.

Each figure is more than a representation of a time of day. Morning depicts a woman awakening. A girl fastens her sandal. Another waters flowers. Midday shows a man holding a laurel wreath. A youth reaches for it. A boy works with a spade.

Evening is a powerful man enjoying himself. A girl plays a stringed instrument. Another prepares to dance. Night portrays a woman under a crescent moon. She protects a sleeping boy. The winged Morpheus whispers dreams.

The Vier Tageszeiten statue is more than just a collection of figures. It’s a testament to endurance. A journey across cities and centuries. It’s a silent story waiting to be heard. A timeless masterpiece in Chemnitz’s heart. It continues to captivate and inspire. Its history whispers of kings and artists. Its presence evokes the passage of time.
