Feel the weight of history as you approach Victory Gate. This gate isn’t just an entrance. It’s a triumphal arch echoing with the stories of ancient Khmer kings and victorious armies.

The Victory Gate stands as one of Angkor Thom’s five main gates. It is located on the eastern wall. King Jayavarman VII ordered its construction in the late 12th century. This gate served as a passage for the king and his army after battles. They celebrated their triumphs here.

Notice the faces on the towers. They are similar to those on other Angkor Thom gates. These serene faces represent Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. They symbolize the king’s constant watch over his empire. He always kept an eye on his people.

Look closely at the carvings. They show the skill of Khmer artisans. The causeway leading to Victory Gate features statues of gods and demons. These figures depict the mythological “Churning of the Ocean of Milk”. It is a common theme here at Angkor.

A unique feature here at Victory Gate is the elephant carvings. Find them at the base of the towers. These carvings symbolize the power of the Khmer Empire. They add to the gate’s imposing presence.

Victory Gate leads directly to the Terrace of the Elephants and the Royal Palace area. Imagine grand processions passing through this gate. Picture royal ceremonies unfolding within the city. This was the heart of Angkor Thom.

Unlike the South Gate, Victory Gate often sees fewer crowds. This provides a more peaceful experience. Take your time to contemplate the gate’s history and significance. Feel the echoes of the past surrounding you.

Consider that Victory Gate connects to a former royal palace. It lies next to the Phimeanakas temple. This placement outside the usual cardinal directions is unique. It highlights the gate’s special role.

Observe the grand naga railing. It’s being pulled by 54 stone giants, Asuras and Devas. This represents the tug-of-war between good and evil. It illustrates the “Churning of the Sea of Milk” from Hindu mythology. Some heads are missing. The southern gate shows a better-preserved railing.

Also, take note of the trio of elephants flanking the doorway. They pull up lotus flowers with their trunks. Above them are three figures, possibly King Jayavarman VII with his queens. Others think it might be Indra with divinities.

Climb the wall on the southern side. Get a closer look at the pediment. Enjoy the views of the faces through the trees. You can also walk along the wall to Prasat Chrung SE.

Remember that Victory Gate had “spurs” like the other gates. This detail comes from historical records dating back to 1920. These spurs once guarded the berms.

Victory Gate is more than just a stone structure. It is a symbol of Khmer power and artistry. It is a gateway to understanding the empire’s glory. Take a moment to appreciate the history etched into every carving. Let the spirit of Angkor Thom envelop you as you pass through Victory Gate.
