Was the Victoria Bridge always destined to be a bridge of resilience? The Victoria Bridge, right before your eyes, has a story deeply intertwined with the spirit of Brisbane. It all began in 1861 with a vision to connect the burgeoning city to its southern banks. The first iteration, a temporary wooden structure aptly named the Brisbane Bridge, succumbed to the ravenous appetite of marine borers and a fateful high tide in 1867. This collapse forced Brisbane to rely once again on ferries, much to the delight of opportunistic ferry operators who seized the chance to double their fares. The city had to wait until 1874 for the first permanent Victoria Bridge, an elegant iron structure named in honor of Queen Victoria. However, disaster struck again in 1893 when a devastating flood, fueled by a record 900mm downpour, tore through the city. The bridge couldn’t withstand the onslaught, and a section was swept away, severing the lifeline to South Brisbane. Undeterred, Brisbane persevered. A new Victoria Bridge, designed by Alfred Barton Brady, rose in 1897. Constructed with steel, wrought iron, and a determination to weather future storms, this bridge became a beloved icon, serving the city diligently for 72 years. But Brisbane kept growing, and by the 1960s, a larger bridge was needed to handle the increasing traffic. Thus, in 1969, the current Victoria Bridge, a sleek and modern concrete marvel, opened to the public. And there it stands today, a testament to the enduring spirit of Brisbane, a city that, much like its Victoria Bridge, knows how to rise above challenges.
