Across the River Clyde stands Victoria Bridge. Its five imposing arches whisper tales of Glasgow’s past. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s the oldest surviving bridge in Glasgow. Imagine its sturdy foundations six meters below the original Bishop’s Bridge. Even deeper lie the remains of a timber bridge from 1285. A testament to Glasgow’s enduring spirit. The Victoria Bridge is more than just a pathway. It’s a living link to history. Connecting the present to a rich heritage. The bridge’s construction was a monumental undertaking. James Walker designed it. William Scott built it. Some say William York was the builder. It replaced the old Bishop’s Bridge. The old bridge couldn’t handle the city’s growing population. By 1851 Glasgow’s population had exploded. It had doubled in just 25 years. The new bridge opened in 1854. Named after Queen Victoria. Glasgow suddenly boasted one of Britain’s widest bridges. It was only second to London’s widest bridge. It measured an impressive 54 feet wide. Today its two lanes carry city-bound traffic. A contraflow lane accommodates buses cyclists and taxis. Its strategic location makes it pivotal. It’s part of the A8. This road weaves through the Bridgegate. It meets the Albert Bridge at Saltmarket. The A814 starts at Saltmarket. It becomes two-way after passing Victoria Bridge. Most traffic flows west onto the A814 or northeast onto Bridgegate. Stockwell Street beyond the bridge is a bus gate. South of the bridge Gorbals Street becomes the A730. It leads to Rutherglen. That section is a bus lane. Other southbound traffic uses Laurieston Road. Stand here and feel the history beneath your feet. This is more than just a bridge. It’s Glasgow’s enduring legacy.
