Poised within Juan Carlos I Park stands Viaje Interior. This sculpture is more than mere wood and steel. It embodies a dialogue between nature and art.

Viaje Interior was created during the 1991 Simposium Internacional de Esculturas al Aire Libre. The city of Madrid organized this event. It celebrated Madrid as the European Capital of Culture in 1992. Eleven international artists were commissioned. Each artist created macro sculptures. These were placed in different locations throughout the park. Each location was chosen by the artist.

Michael Warren designed Viaje Interior. He was a Dublin sculptor. Warren’s work became piece number 13. It now integrates the Senda de las Esculturas. This path invites visitors to explore art’s relationship with nature. Viaje Interior exemplifies this connection.

The sculpture sits amid a pre existing olive grove. Viaje Interior integrates human creation with the natural environment. It blends form and poetry. Four prismatic wooden posts anchor the structure. These posts vary in height. A steel base secures them. An inscription “M’90” is engraved.

Most posts consist of two pieces. These are cut and assembled. Bolts, pins, and metal plates hold them together. The elements are placed irregularly parallel. They align diagonally. Their verticality evokes tree trunks. One post exhibits a subtle break.

Viaje Interior uses contrasting materials. Natural wood meets artificial steel. Both undergo progressive alteration. Atmospheric action and time affect them equally. This suggests an essential symbiosis. It is a link between nature and science.

The sculpture’s dimensions are 6.50 x 7.00 x 5.00 meters. Mahogany wood and weathering steel comprise it. The property is municipal.

Consider the interplay. The natural slowly weathers. The industrial gradually rusts. Viaje Interior captures a moment. It is a meeting point.

The artist encourages reflection. The sculpture invites contemplation on time’s passage. It shows the relationship between humanity and the environment. It offers a space for introspection.

So as you stand before Viaje Interior consider its message. Think about nature. Ponder science. Reflect on art. The sculpture is an invitation. It is an invitation to look within. It is an invitation to explore the journey of your interior.
