Imagine the scene in 1860. Construction began on May 7th. Workers labored tirelessly, shaping sandstone blocks. By September 16, 1861, the arches were complete. The entire project cost 260,356 Taler. That was a significant sum in those days.
The need for such a grand bridge arose from the area’s topography. The railway line between Tharandt and Freiberg, opened on August 11, 1862, had to navigate several deep river valleys. The Viadukt Muldenhütten was one of several large bridges needed. These also include Colmnitzbach, Bobritzsch, Freiberger Mulde, Striegis, Flöha and Zschopau.
Observe the Viadukt Muldenhütten’s architecture. It stretches almost 196 meters in length. The bridge soars 43 meters high. It is eight meters wide. Notice the eight arches. Five large arches each span 25.39 meters. Three smaller outer arches measure 9.06 meters each. These arches are not perfect semi-circles. They are subtly curved.
The Viadukt Muldenhütten is built of natural stone. Sandstone blocks were carefully cut. These form the vaults. Look closely at the cornice. See how it is profiled at the arch bases. Above this are strong pilasters. The central arch is framed by two pilasters. The parapet above is solid, except for metal railings which have been renewed over time.
In 1932, the crown of the structure was widened during renovations. Later, in 1997, the Viadukt Muldenhütten underwent extensive restoration as part of the Sachsen-Franken-Magistrale expansion. A new reinforced concrete roadway was installed.
