Remember the San Fernando Valley earthquake of 1971? Veterans Memorial Park stands here today a testament to resilience. This 97-acre park wasn’t always a place of peace and recreation. It was once the site of the San Fernando Veterans Administration Hospital. A hospital sadly damaged beyond repair in that devastating earthquake.

The hospital wasn’t just any hospital. It had a reputation as the “country club of veterans hospitals.” Patients enjoyed relaxing on the lawns. Squirrels were plentiful. The atmosphere was peaceful. Then came the earthquake. Forty-nine lives were lost. The hospital’s ruins were removed. In 1979 the land transformed into Veterans Memorial Park.

Veterans Memorial Park is more than just a park. It’s a memorial. A tribute to those who served. And those who perished in the earthquake. The park offers grassy picnic areas. There’s a large pavilion. Camping areas are available. And a community recreation building stands ready for visitors. Hikers can access the Angeles National Forest through nearby trails. An 18-hole disc golf course provides recreation.

The park has faced challenges. Wildfires have caused damage. The 2008 Sayre Fire was especially devastating. It destroyed the administration building and other structures. Yet the park perseveres. It remains a vital community space. A place of reflection and remembrance.

Veterans Memorial Park’s history is intertwined with tragedy. With recovery. With the enduring spirit of the community. It’s a place where nature meets history. Where recreation blends with reflection. Take a moment to appreciate the park’s beauty. Let it be a reminder of the strength of the human spirit. A spirit that endures even amidst devastation. Veterans Memorial Park stands as a symbol of hope and healing. A tribute to those we have lost and the community that rebuilt.
