Who could have imagined such despair? This, my friends, is the Verzweiflung Statue. It’s a monument to anguish, a testament to human sorrow frozen in time. The Verzweiflung Statue has borne witness to the shifting tides of history from its place here in Görlitz’s Stadtpark. Originally, this poignant statue resided in the grand gardens of Count Fritz von Hochberg’s castle in Halbau, Silesia. But in 1919, it found a new home here in Görlitz. Reichsgraf Hans Heinrich XV von Hochberg, with a heavy heart, gifted the statue to the city in memory of his secretary, Adolf Berthelmann, a son of Görlitz who tragically passed away in 1918. You can see the inscription on the pedestal, a poignant reminder of Berthelmann’s legacy: “Legacy of a Görlitz child, Mr. Adolf Berthelmann 1919”. The statue’s creator, the sculptor Richard Engelmann, masterfully captured the raw emotion of despair in the contorted pose of the figure. This statue, crafted from artificial stone, stands as a silent sentinel. It serves as a solemn reminder of the deep capacity for emotion that resides within us all.
