Established in 1963 Vertbaudet’s story is one of family legacy and entrepreneurial spirit. Anselme Dewavrin a textile magnate from a long line of Northern France merchants founded the company. His family had a history in textiles dating back centuries. They even invested in industrial weaving machinery as early as 1826. Vertbaudet initially sold children’s clothing through catalogs. This was a smart move. It leveraged the established mail-order system prevalent in the Lille area. This area was a hub for textile commerce since the 18th century.

The Dewavrin family’s influence extended beyond Lille. Jacques Dewavrin one of Anselme’s sons negotiated the establishment of a textile factory in Auchel. This was a mining town. This strategic move secured state subsidies for investments. The family’s business acumen involved securing public funding for every new venture.

The first Vertbaudet store opened in Lille in 1996 marking a significant milestone. This same year Vertbaudet expanded internationally to Great Britain. By 1999 Vertbaudet launched its first online sales website. This reflected the growing importance of the internet in retail.

Later the Dewavrin heirs opted to sell their shares rather than continuing the family business. The textile branch was subsequently acquired by an American multinational. This led to the closure of the last factories in Tourcoing and Auchel in 2006. Production shifted to Bulgaria. This decision highlighted the economic realities of global competition.

Despite the change in ownership the Vertbaudet brand continued to thrive. It expanded its product range beyond clothing. It now includes home goods nursery items toys and maternity products. The company’s success lies in its ability to adapt to changing consumer demands. Vertbaudet has maintained its presence as a leader in children’s products. Their enduring appeal rests on a unique blend of tradition innovation and customer focus. The story of this company reflects the dynamism of Lille’s entrepreneurial spirit. It stands as a testament to the power of family legacies. It highlights the ever-evolving landscape of the retail industry. And it shows the resilience of a brand that has stood the test of time.
