Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

A steel giant stretches across the horizon, its massive towers reaching for the sky. This is the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, a marvel of engineering that has connected Brooklyn and Staten Island for over 60 years. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge wasn’t always a guaranteed success. In fact, before its construction, the city considered several other options, including a tunnel. Those plans were ultimately scrapped, and in the late 1940s, Robert Moses, the famous urban planner, championed the idea of a bridge. Construction finally began in 1959, and five years later, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened to much fanfare. At the time of its opening in 1964, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. This title was held until 1981 when the Humber Bridge in England surpassed it. However, it remains the longest suspension bridge in North America. The bridge is an impressive sight. Its main span stretches a staggering 4,260 feet, and its towers soar 693 feet above the water. This incredible height allows even the largest ships to pass underneath. The bridge is named for Giovanni da Verrazzano, a 16th-century Italian explorer who was the first European to sail into New York Harbor. Ironically, the bridge’s name was misspelled for over 50 years. It was originally written with only one “z” instead of two. It wasn’t until 2018 that a bill was finally passed to correct the mistake. Despite the misspelling, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge remains an enduring symbol of New York City’s ambition and engineering prowess. It has become an iconic part of the city’s skyline and a testament to the human ability to connect even the most daunting of spaces.
