Vermont Gurdwara Sikh

A symphony of gold. That’s the first thing that strikes you about the Vermont Gurdwara Sikh. Twenty-three onion domes, painted in shimmering gold, rise against the Los Angeles sky. The Vermont Gurdwara Sikh, also known as the Hollywood Sikh Temple, stands as a testament to a vibrant community and a rich history. The current structure, completed in 1996, replaced an earlier temple on the same site. The original Hollywood Sikh Temple, opened in 1969 by Dr. Amarjit Marwah, held the distinction of being the first Sikh temple in the United States after India’s independence. Its opening also marked the 500th anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. The original temple, housed in a converted 1913 single-family residence, served the growing Sikh community until the mid-1980s. Sunday services drew between 200 and 300 worshippers, eventually necessitating a larger space. The old building was demolished in 1986, paving the way for the grand structure you see today. The Vermont Gurdwara Sikh isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a cultural hub, a symbol of resilience, and a testament to the vision of Dr. Amarjit Marwah. In 2019, the intersection of Vermont and Finley Avenues, where the temple stands, was renamed Dr. Amarjit Marwah Square. This honor further solidified the temple’s place in the fabric of Los Angeles. Inside, the Vermont Gurdwara Sikh is a feast for the senses. Imagine stepping into the circular entrance hall, adorned with paintings, display cases, and a grand chandelier. The main hall boasts double-high ceilings, more sparkling chandeliers, and a breathtaking mural of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The second floor houses a special room for the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture, complete with its own chandelier, a canopied throne, and decorative wallpaper. As you leave the Vermont Gurdwara Sikh, take a moment to appreciate the ornate facades facing Finley and Vermont Avenues. The recessed entrance on Finley Avenue, with its wood-panel doors and marble steps, exudes a quiet elegance. The Vermont Avenue facade features a beautiful arcade with arches and awnings. Look closely and you’ll see the second-story bays adorned with khandas, the Sikh symbol, and golden lettering that tells the temple’s story. The Vermont Gurdwara Sikh is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith, community, and the enduring legacy of Sikhism in Los Angeles.
