Journey back to the 15th century in Vermezzo. Imagine a young officer, Gustavo Panigarola, serving under the powerful Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan. He acquires a dilapidated castle in Vermezzo, transforming it into the magnificent Palazzo Pozzobonelli Panigarola you see before you. Vermezzo, a quiet village southwest of Milan, became Panigarola’s canvas. He infused the palazzo with the artistic spirit of the Renaissance. Frescoes, inspired by the masters Leonardo da Vinci and Bramante, adorned the walls. Centuries later, in the 1700s, the palazzo returned to the Pozzobonelli family. It became the summer residence of Cardinal Giuseppe Pozzobonelli, a prominent figure in Milanese society. Today, the Lattuada family owns this historic gem. Look closely at the building. Notice the distinctive “U” shape, with two wings extending from the central structure. A partially enclosed loggia, graced with decorative friezes, hints at the grandeur within. Some critics even believe they see Bramante’s touch in those very friezes. Inside, 18th-century elegance blends seamlessly with two rooms from the 15th century. These rooms showcase exquisite frescoes, delicate floral motifs preserved through time. On the exterior, restored Gothic windows, framed by terracotta, whisper stories of Vermezzo’s past. Traces of ancient decorations still cling to the stone. The Palazzo Pozzobonelli Panigarola in Vermezzo stands as a testament to the enduring power of art, history, and the vision of one man who sought to create beauty in a quiet village.
