It started as the Pioniergarten a training ground for young pioneers. They learned to navigate miniature streets in small gas-powered cars built by the Neptun shipyard. Imagine those little cars zooming around.

Today fourth graders from all over Rostock come here. Before they even touch a pedal two classroom sessions with the police teach them the rules. Then comes the real test the Verkehrs- und Freizeitgarten itself. For two days they practice. They walk the course first figuring out the route and asking questions. Then it’s on the bikes.

The second day is all about the exam. They’ll face right-of-way rules roundabouts safe starting techniques pedestrian crossings and even simulated construction zones. Each child takes the test individually. No copying allowed. A green yellow or red certificate seals their fate. Passing means mastering the miniature city.
