In 1754, a French Huguenot carpenter named James Veree purchased land on Church Street. This land included the future site of the Veree-Duvall House at 60 Church Street. Veree likely built the house shortly after acquiring the property. The Veree-Duvall House’s most remarkable feature is the first-floor west room. This room boasts pre-Revolutionary mahogany paneling with intricate fretwork inlay. This exquisite woodwork is possibly the work of Martin Pfeninger, a German cabinetmaker who resided in Charleston during the 1770s. Later, Veree moved to Burlington, New Jersey. He sold 60 Church Street to Stephen Duvall, a harbor pilot. Duvall lavishly furnished the home, as documented in his estate inventory. A dedicated officer in the South Carolina navy during the Revolution, Duvall met a tragic end. He succumbed to fever while imprisoned by the British under Charleston’s Exchange Building in 1780. The Veree-Duvall House stands as a testament to Charleston’s rich history. It reflects the craftsmanship of early builders. It whispers tales of its former inhabitants.
