Five thousand five hundred years ago Indigenous peoples inhabited this very land. We stand in Verdun a borough of Montreal. Verdun’s history is rich and layered. It’s a story woven from Indigenous heritage early colonial settlement and dramatic 20th-century transformation.

The area’s name is a shortened version of Saverdun in France. Zacharie Dupuy an early settler hailed from Saverdun. He named his fief Verdun in 1671. The land was later donated to the Congregation de Notre-Dame. They constructed the Maison Nivard-De Saint-Dizier in 1710. This house stands as a testament to Verdun’s enduring past. It’s a museum showcasing the area’s early history.

Verdun was once known as Côte-des-Argoulets. This referred to the arquebus a type of infantry gun used by early militiamen. They were granted land here in 1665 in exchange for defending against the Iroquois. The area’s development was initially hampered by frequent flooding. A dyke constructed starting in 1896 brought about a population boom. This dyke supported Verdun’s popular boardwalk before land reclamation efforts in the 1970s. Today the boardwalk is part of Verdun’s expansive waterfront park.

The 20th century saw Verdun grow rapidly. It became a city in 1912. Between 1911 and 1924 its population tripled. The western part of Verdun developed rapidly filling with the characteristic Montreal plexes. The Verdun Natatorium the Verdun Hospital and the Verdun Auditorium were also built during this period.

Verdun’s transformation continued. The municipality of Île-Saint-Paul (now Nuns’ Island) was annexed in 1956. This fueled further growth especially after the Champlain Bridge opened in 1962. The Green Line of the Montreal Metro reached Verdun in 1978. This improved access to downtown Montreal. However it also led to a decline in local commerce which was later revitalized starting in the 1990s.

In 2002 Verdun became a borough of Montreal. Its transformation is ongoing. It is experiencing gentrification and social change. Once a working-class neighbourhood it’s now one of Montreal’s most desirable places to live. Verdun’s history continues to unfold before our eyes. From Indigenous settlements to its present day vibrancy Verdun’s story is an unforgettable one.
