Across the bustling intersection, the Venice Sign beckons. This iconic landmark stands as a vibrant reminder of Venice’s rich history. The Venice Sign isn’t just a sign. It’s a beacon, symbolizing the spirit of this unique beachside community. Originally erected in 1905 by Abbot Kinney, the founder of Venice of America, the Venice Sign was a symbol of his ambitious vision. The original sign illuminated Windward Avenue on July 4th, 1905, marking Venice’s grand debut. Sadly, this early version eventually disappeared, likely around the time the Venice Pier closed in 1947. The Venice Sign we see today is a modern replica, lovingly restored and reinstalled in 2007 thanks to the Venice Sign Restoration Project. The Venice Chamber of Commerce now holds the trademark and ensures the sign’s continued brilliance. The sign isn’t static. It’s a chameleon, changing colors throughout the year to mark holidays and special events. It glows green for St. Patrick’s Day, red, white, and blue for the 4th of July, and festive red and green for the winter holidays. It even adopts rainbow hues for Pride Month and pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Beyond the scheduled color changes, the Venice Sign occasionally transforms for unique events. It has shone blue and gold for the LA Rams, and even morphed into a “Doors” sign to celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary. Every year, the first Saturday in December brings the magical Holiday Lighting of the Venice Sign. This community event features local entertainment, businesses, and a surprise celebrity guest who flips the switch, transforming the sign’s bright white lights to the festive red and green of the holiday season. The Venice Sign has become a cherished backdrop for countless photos. Visitors from around the world pause at the intersection of Windward Avenue and Pacific Boulevard, capturing their own moment with this iconic landmark. The Venice Sign continues to shine brightly, thanks to the dedication of the Venice Chamber of Commerce. They manage its upkeep, protect its trademark, and promote it as a symbol of the vibrant Venice business community. The Venice Sign isn’t merely a sign. It is the heart of Venice, a symbol of its past, present, and future.
