Seven kilometers of stone. That’s how long the Venetian city walls of Heraklion stretch. Imagine the sheer effort to build them.

These walls aren’t just stones. They’re a testament to centuries of history. They stand as silent witnesses to the longest siege in history second only to the Siege of Malta. For twenty-one years the Venetian city walls of Heraklion withstood the relentless Ottoman onslaught. The city ultimately fell in 1669 not through force but through betrayal. Think about that. Twenty-one years.

Construction began in 1462. The existing Byzantine walls were inadequate against gunpowder weapons. Master architects Michele Sanmicheli and Giulio Savorgnan designed this masterpiece of defensive architecture. Their work took over a century. The walls were so strong that they remained almost untouched even after two decades of constant bombardment.

The walls form a triangle. Their base hugs the sea. The Martinengo bastion marks the apex. This bastion is gigantic. It’s so large that a modern football pitch occupies only 60% of its area. Picture that vast expanse.

Seven massive bastions defended the walls: Saint Andrew Pantocrator Bethlehem Martinengo Jesus Vitturi and Sampionara. Each a fortress in itself. Four main gates and three military gates pierced the walls. A deep moat once surrounded them offering additional protection. Sadly the outer defenses the outworks are gone. They were lost to time and later development.

The Ottomans after conquering Heraklion maintained and repaired these walls. The scars of World War II bombings are visible but they too have been healed.

Today the Venetian city walls of Heraklion are more than just ruins. They are a living museum. You can visit the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis near the Martinengo bastion. The Manos Hatzidakis Open-air Theater and the Nikos Kazantzakis Garden Theater are within the walls. These walls are a treasure. They tell a story of resilience and endurance. They are a powerful symbol of Heraklion’s rich and complex past. Take a moment to reflect on their impressive scale their long history and their enduring significance. They speak of struggle defense and ultimate resilience. These walls will continue to inspire and amaze for generations to come.
