Whispers of Vedanta fill the air. This is the Vedanta Society of Southern California’s San Diego Monastery. A place where ancient wisdom finds a modern home.

For decades before its official opening in 1983 devotees gathered in private homes. Violet Eaton Shankari a long-time devotee started it all. She opened her Del Mar home for Vedanta gatherings. Other devotees joined eager to learn after years of traveling to Hollywood. Monks and nuns came teaching Vedanta. When Shankari moved east Marian Harrington Girija continued hosting.

Their dedication spread the word. Classes grew. Swami Swahananda saw the need for a permanent center. A house was purchased. Monastics devotees and friends worked together to create what you see today. A testament to collective effort and faith.

The San Diego Vedanta Monastery now stands proudly. A branch of the larger Vedanta Society of Southern California. It offers lectures classes meditation and even vesper services. Saturday mornings see lectures on Vedanta philosophy. These are followed by lively question-and-answer sessions. Weeknights bring more focused classes and spiritual discussions.

Special retreats delve deeper into specific topics. These often require registration and a small fee. The annual Krishna Puja is a grand celebration. It marks the monastery’s founding. This vibrant event with a Prasad lunch is a highlight of the year. It celebrates the birthday of Lord Krishna.
