The sweet scent of vanilla hangs heavy in the air. Welcome to the vanilla plantations of La Digue. Here amidst the lush greenery a rich history unfolds.

For over a century these plantations were the heart of Seychelles’ economy. Vanilla a precious spice was grown here in abundance. It was a time of great prosperity. Wealth flowed from these very fields. Landowners dedicated vast acres to this lucrative crop.

Did you know that vanilla’s journey began in Mexico? The Aztecs prized it. They used it to flavour chocolate and create medicines. But it wasn’t until the early 1700s that vanilla arrived in Europe. Then in 1812 it reached Reunion and Mauritius. A pivotal moment arrived in 1829. A young enslaved boy named Edmond Albius discovered a way to hand-pollinate the vanilla flower. This ingenious method revolutionized vanilla cultivation. It unlocked the potential for mass production. It brought immense wealth to plantation owners across the Indian Ocean.

Vanilla arrived in Seychelles in 1866. The first export was a modest 60 kilos. However by 1899 production soared to an astonishing 41835 kilos. Seychelles became a vanilla powerhouse. Between 1893 and 1903 the islands produced more vanilla than all other British colonies combined. This golden age didn’t last forever. Cheaper synthetic vanillin emerged. It threatened the traditional vanilla industry. By the 1960s production dramatically declined.

Yet even today you see the legacy of vanilla. The fragrant plants still thrive in some areas. Tessa Fanny a local entrepreneur continues the tradition. She cultivates and processes Seychellois vanilla. She keeps this unique part of La Digue’s heritage alive. Her work ensures that the sweet story of vanilla continues for generations to come. This is more than just a plantation. It is a living testament to ingenuity resilience and the enduring allure of a precious spice. Take a moment to breathe in that intoxicating aroma. Feel the weight of history beneath your feet. The story of vanilla is woven into the very soil of La Digue.
