Resting on the eastern slope of Todt Hill stands the Vanderbilt Family Cemetery. A private sanctuary it holds the legacy of one of America’s most prominent families.
This isn’t just any cemetery. The Vanderbilt Family Cemetery and Mausoleum are significant historical sites. They were designed by the renowned architect Richard Morris Hunt and Frederick Law Olmsted. They designed the grounds in the late 19th century when the Vanderbilts were at the height of their wealth. The mausoleum itself is a stunning example of Romanesque Revival architecture. It’s inspired by the 12th-century Saint-Gilles-du-Gard Abbey in France.
Imagine the opulence of the Vanderbilt family. Their influence extended far beyond their immense fortune. They generously donated land to the Moravian Cemetery. This shows their philanthropy and connection to the community. The Vanderbilt plot however remained private. Interment within the mausoleum was strictly for Vanderbilts.
