In 1699, Jacobus Van Cortlandt, a prominent figure in colonial New York, looked out at the flowing Tibbetts Brook and saw opportunity. He envisioned harnessing its power. He dammed the brook, creating Van Cortlandt Lake and powering a sawmill and later, a gristmill. This lake, nestled within what would become Van Cortlandt Park, became the heart of a vast estate. Van Cortlandt Park today stands as a testament to the intertwining of nature and human history. It’s the third-largest park in New York City, a sprawling 1,146-acre oasis in the Bronx. The park’s history is deeply rooted in the Van Cortlandt family, who owned the land during the Dutch and English colonial periods. The park officially came into being in 1888, when the family sold the property to the city. Van Cortlandt Park’s landscape is remarkably diverse. From the rugged terrain of the Northwest Woods, with its Fordham gneiss outcroppings, to the gentler slopes of the Tibbetts Brook valley carved from Inwood marble, the park offers a variety of hiking experiences. Five major trails wind through the park, including the Putnam Trail and the Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway, each offering a glimpse into the park’s natural and historical tapestry. The oldest public golf course in the country lies within Van Cortlandt Park. Opened in 1895, the Van Cortlandt Golf Course began as a nine-hole course. It was later expanded to 18 holes, reflecting the growing popularity of the sport. Van Cortlandt Park’s Parade Ground, once a vast grain plantation worked by enslaved Africans, is now a hub for recreation. Cricket, baseball, football, and soccer fields dot the landscape, echoing the laughter and cheers of countless athletes. The Van Cortlandt House Museum, the oldest surviving house in the Bronx, stands as a reminder of the park’s colonial past. Built in 1748, it served as a headquarters for both British and American troops during the Revolutionary War. Today, it offers a fascinating glimpse into 18th-century life. Within Van Cortlandt Park lies a poignant reminder of a darker chapter in its history: the Enslaved African Burial Ground. This site, discovered through historical records and geophysical studies, honors the memory of the enslaved Africans and Indigenous people who labored on the Van Cortlandt plantation. Van Cortlandt Park is more than just a recreational space. It’s a living museum, a place where history and nature intertwine to create a truly unique experience. As you explore its trails, fields, and historical landmarks, you’ll discover the rich and complex story of Van Cortlandt Park.
