Ever wondered where the name Vamp Building came from? Right here in Lynn stands the Vamp Building. It is a historic factory building. You will find it at 3-15 Liberty Square.

The Vamp Building’s story begins in 1903. The Lynn Realty Company built it as Building #4. Henry Warren Rogers a local architect designed it. Over the next four years, they extended it. It grew to fill the entire block. Washington Street, Union Street, and Liberty Square became its borders.

Its V-shape is quite distinctive. This shape reminded people of the vamp of a shoe. The vamp is the upper part of a shoe. This resemblance gave the Vamp Building its unusual name.

In its early days, the Vamp Building buzzed with activity. It housed businesses related to shoe manufacturing. At the time, it was the largest brick building of its kind. The Vamp Building was the largest in the world.

The Vamp Building faced a major challenge in 1981. A fire broke out on November 28. But the building withstood much of the damage. Only the top floor was lost. The building’s strong construction helped. A newly installed sprinkler system also played a vital role. These features limited the fire’s destruction. They stopped the blaze from spreading further.

The Vamp Building earned recognition in 1983. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Henry Warren Rogers designed three registered buildings in Lynn. The Vamp Building is one of them. So it is a significant landmark.

Today, the Vamp Building stands as a testament to Lynn’s history. It reminds us of the city’s industrial past. It is a symbol of resilience. Its unique shape and history make it a memorable landmark. The Vamp Building has an important place in Lynn’s story.
