Hidden within the San Fernando Valley lies the Valley Hanano Church. Let’s unravel its captivating story. Originally named Our Lady of the Valley, this Catholic church has witnessed the valley’s transformation. In 1921, it served a sprawling 400 square miles. The majority of its 620 parishioners cultivated walnut and orange groves or tended livestock. Imagine the church as a beacon amidst vast agricultural lands, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the valley’s patroness. After World War II, the valley blossomed with residential communities. The Catholic population surged. Our Lady of the Valley’s vast territory was then divided among nine new parishes. Though its physical boundaries shrank to four square miles, its congregation grew significantly. Now it embraces over 4100 families. Monsignor John J. Hurley guided the church as pastor for over three decades, from 1943 to 1975. The 1994 Northridge earthquake dealt a heavy blow, inflicting $800,000 in damage. Yet, like the resilient valley it serves, the church was renovated and reopened in November 1995. Valley Hanano Church, once Our Lady of the Valley, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith amidst change.
