Wow. Look at Valley Fair Mall. This sprawling single-level haven of shopping and entertainment has a story to tell. It’s more than just rows of stores. It’s a snapshot of West Valley City’s history.
Valley Fair Mall opened its doors in 1970. It sits proudly at the southwest corner of I-215 and West 3500 South. Back then it was a brand-new addition to the landscape. A place of excitement and opportunity.
The mall’s early years saw a steady stream of shoppers. A hub of activity as Roger Pusey from the Deseret News described it in 1991. The mall had around 120 shops. A food court for hungry shoppers. A movie theater for entertainment.
Times changed though. The mall faced some tough times. In 2005 a new management team Satterfield Helm Management Inc took over. They saw the potential for a remarkable transformation. They began a four-phase redevelopment project. This involved a massive renovation. A new Costco even opened in 2007. This was a major boost for the mall.
The redevelopment wasn’t without its bumps. The recession hit hard. The construction of the West Valley City TRAX line caused disruptions. Mervyn’s one of the mall’s anchors went bankrupt. The management team had to overcome huge hurdles. They persevered though. They showed incredible determination.
West Valley City invested millions in the project. The addition of Ross and Petco was a crucial step in the turnaround. The Larry H Miller Megaplex opened in 2012. This brought in a new type of shopper. The mall underwent a significant facelift. Its interior was redesigned. It now resembled a streetscape. A more family-friendly atmosphere was created.
Sadly the mall also saw its share of difficult events. In 2020 Bed Bath & Beyond closed. In 2023 a shooting occurred. Luckily the victim survived. The suspects were caught.
Today Valley Fair Mall continues to evolve. It hosts a mix of familiar names and newer tenants. The mall remains a vibrant part of the community. It stands as a testament to resilience and adaptation. A place where history and progress meet. It has come a long way. Its journey is a testament to its enduring spirit.
