Curiosity whispered through the chilled air. Here we stand before the Valley View Indoor Mausoleum. It’s a place where stories rest, encased in marble and granite. The Valley View Indoor Mausoleum, opened in March 2015 within the grounds of Moravian Cemetery in New Dorp. It arose from a pressing need. Staten Island faced dwindling burial space. The mausoleum offered a solution, a place to build upwards instead of outwards.
The Valley View Indoor Mausoleum isn’t just a response to a practical problem. It’s a testament to changing traditions. Cremation is on the rise, and the mausoleum caters to this shift. It offers nearly equal space for caskets and cremation urns. The designers aimed for comfort and invitation. The interior, primarily Italian marble and granite, offers climate control. Visitors can escape the elements and find respite on the provided benches.
Three private family rooms bathe in natural sunlight. The largest can hold up to 24 relatives, while the others accommodate 12 each. These rooms offer gated security, with keys provided to family members. For cremation urns, there are around 1,300 niches. Some are lighted glass and bronze displays. Others are enclosed granite spaces. Companion niches can hold two urns. The mausoleum provides approximately 1,500 casket spaces. Single, double, triple, and even quadruple crypts are available, a first for Moravian Cemetery.
The Valley View Indoor Mausoleum is more than just a building. It echoes the sentiment of Moravian Cemetery itself. A place of quiet beauty and serenity, it beckons the living while offering repose to those who rest within. It’s a manifestation of respect and affection, a place where memories endure, sheltered from the passage of time.
