Perhaps Valdebernardo’s most interesting fact is that it only became an independent entity in 2017. This happened after an administrative reorganization of the Vicálvaro district. The Ayuntamiento de Madrid made the change. Now, let’s explore the story of this young neighborhood.

Valdebernardo is an administrative neighborhood in Madrid. It belongs to the district of Vicálvaro. Think of it as a new kid on the block. It is still finding its identity.

The urbanization planning for Valdebernardo started in the 1980s. The regional administration took over the project in 1989. It was called PAU or Programa de Actuación Urbanística.

Interestingly, there was a plan to build a huge armillary sphere here. It would have been 92 meters high. It was meant to be a symbol of Madrid. Sadly, the project never happened. Imagine what that would have looked like.

Two boulevards form the backbone of Valdebernardo. They are Indalecio Prieto and José Prat. These streets are vital arteries for the neighborhood. They help people move around.

Valdebernardo covers an area of 2.35 square kilometers. That is just under one square mile. In 2020, the population was 17,851. That is a density of 7,600 people per square kilometer. It is a fairly crowded place.

Valdebernardo is located in the southwest of the Vicálvaro district. It is bordered by several major roads. The M-40 ring road is to the west. The A-3 highway is to the south. The Cercanías Madrid railway lines C-2 and C-7 are to the east.

Several streets define the northern boundary. These include Avenida de las Comunidades and Calle Marmolina. Also Calle de la Dehesa de Vicálvaro and Avenida de la Aurora Boreal. Avenida de la Democracia and Plaza de Alonso too. Finally, Camino Viejo de Vicálvaro.

Several architects and engineers worked on the Valdebernardo project. José María Ezquiaga led the team. Vicente Zaforas managed the promoting consortium. Many contributed to the urbanization.

Valdebernardo has good transportation links. Metro Line connects the neighborhood. There is a Valdebernardo station. Several bus lines also serve the area. Roads provide easy access too.

In conclusion, Valdebernardo is a young neighborhood with a unique history. From its planning in the 1980s to its formal establishment in 2017, it has evolved. Although the armillary sphere was never built, Valdebernardo continues to grow. It connects people in Madrid.
