“Valbom,” the boatmen used to call out, their voices echoing across the Douro River. Today, we explore Valbom, a city with a rich past as a fishing village.

Valbom sits in the municipality of Gondomar. It gained city status in 2004, marking its growth and importance.

For generations, Valbom thrived on fishing. Its location on the Douro River made it a prime spot for traditional fishing. The “Valboeiros,” traditional boats, were a common sight. These boats played a key role in the local economy. Over time, larger boats employing trawling methods were introduced. This led to a decline in the traditional fishing industry of Valbom.

But Valbom did not disappear. Local crafts have taken over. Woodworking and goldsmithing now dominate the economy. Skilled artisans create intricate pieces. Filigree work and wood carvings showcase Valbom’s artistic talent.

In 2013, Valbom joined with Sāo Cosme and Jovim. They formed a new parish called Gondomar. Despite this change, Valbom keeps its unique identity.

Valbom was the location for a significant historical event. The Convention of Gramido was signed here in Casa Branca. This agreement ended the civil war of the Septembrists against the Cartists.

The Douro River shapes Valbom’s identity and history. The river connects Valbom to Porto and the Atlantic.

Now, artisan workshops line Valbom’s streets. The scent of wood mixes with the gleam of gold. Generations of craftsmanship pass down. Each piece tells a story of Valbom’s dedication to its traditions.

Valbom continues to evolve. Yet it honors its fishing village past. A past where the river was the lifeblood. Today, the spirit of Valbom lives on. It lives on in the hands of its artisans. It lives on in the memory of its fishing heritage. It lives on in its people’s determination.
