In 1842, a name appeared on maps, a whisper of “Sorgenfri.” Right here, in what is now Västra Sorgenfri, stood a simple farmstead. It belonged to a city dweller seeking respite from the bustling streets of Malmö, a place of “no worries,” inspired by Sorgenfri Palace in Denmark. Västra Sorgenfri wasn’t always a vibrant neighborhood. It began as a collection of allotment gardens, providing sustenance for Malmö families in the early 1900s. Imagine these plots, bursting with life, feeding a growing city. The transformation began with the “culture houses,” two-story buildings that sprouted up around 1916. But the real boom came in 1926, fueled by changes in credit markets. Suddenly, building became easier, and Västra Sorgenfri blossomed. City planner Erik Bülow-Hübe envisioned a new form for this area in 1927, shaping the streets and spaces we see today. Most of the buildings here echo his vision, whispering tales of the 1920s and 30s. The population of Västra Sorgenfri reached nearly 6,000 by 2011, a testament to its enduring appeal. The area retains a unique charm, a blend of carefully planned gardens and streets that hark back to its origins. This area, once a patchwork of gardens, now stands as a testament to Malmö’s growth. It’s a place where the echoes of “no worries” still resonate in the quiet streets and the carefully tended gardens of Västra Sorgenfri.
