Named after the German industrialist Robert Bosch, the UWC Robert Bosch College stands as a beacon of international education. It is located in Freiburg, Germany. What if I told you that this college, one of eighteen United World Colleges worldwide, began accepting students in September 2014?
The UWC Robert Bosch College’s mission aligns with the UWC movement. It aims “to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future”. This college offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. It covers the final two years of high school.
Approximately 200 students form the student body. They are selected by over 140 national committees globally. These committees review applications and invite students for interviews. Each year group comprises around 100 students. About 25% come from Germany. The remaining 75% are from other countries. The college boasts around 90 nationalities. This creates a diversity of religious and socio-economic backgrounds. Over 70% of students receive full scholarships. This is thanks to a network of sponsors.
The campus is fully residential. It is located on the newly refurbished Freiburg Charterhouse. This was formerly a Carthusian monastery dating back to the 14th century. Peter Kulka designed the cube-shaped student houses. These houses adhere to Freiburg’s energy-efficient standards. Solar panels power the sustainable houses. The student village has eight houses for students and four for teachers. Each student house accommodates around 24 people. Houses feature kitchens with common supplies. They also have living rooms, bathrooms, and storage.
Sustainability is a key focus at UWC Robert Bosch College. The college integrates sustainability into academics and student life. It is also reflected in the architecture of the buildings. The college collaborates with city institutions. Students and staff contribute to sustainability education on campus. The college’s location near the Black Forest National Park allows for outdoor programs.
Students engage in diverse activities. They include baking, blogging, and improvising with the A-Capella group. They also perform at city institutions with the RBC string ensemble. Students participate in debating, international vegan cooking, and various dance styles. Sports like soccer, bouldering, yoga, and Taekwondo are also available.
UWC Robert Bosch College partners with Freiburg institutions. These include schools, kindergartens, refugee camps, and care homes. Students visit these projects weekly. Twice a year, students engage in Project Week. They participate in social service, activity, or creativity projects. Four times a year, the college hosts Special Focus Days. These include presentations and workshops on themes like Interfaith Dialogue and Sustainability.
The Robert Bosch Stiftung and Deutsche Stiftung UWC jointly support the UWC Robert Bosch College. The Robert Bosch Stiftung contributed about 45 million Euros to the project. The college is a testament to Robert Bosch’s vision. It fosters intercultural understanding among young people. It equips them to contribute to a more peaceful and sustainable world.
