Utase Elementary School’s design was completed in 1995. Coelacanth and Associates were the architects. Kazuhiro Kojima and Kazuko Akamatsu led the design team. The school’s structure is primarily reinforced concrete. Some parts use a steel frame.
The school spans two stories. Its site covers 16,500 square meters. The building area is 5,010.65 square meters. The total floor area reaches 7,584.86 square meters.
Utase Elementary School received several awards. In 1995, it won the Chiba City Excellent Architecture Prize. In 1996, it received the Chiba Prefecture Architecture Culture Award. The school also earned a Japan Institute of Architects Prize in 1997. It was also selected for Architectural Design works of Architectural Institute of Japan in 2008. Furthermore it won the Cultural Prize of Architecture, Chiba Pref. 2007 and the Design Award, Association for children’s environment 2007 and the Prize for Excellent Architecture, Chiba-City 2007.
