“Ready to defend” is not just a motto. It is the essence of the Utah Air National Guard. Today, we stand before a vital part of Utah’s defense network. This is the Roland R. Wright Air National Guard Base. It is home to dedicated men and women. They serve and protect both state and nation.
The Utah Air National Guard has a rich history. It began on November 18, 1946. The 191st Fighter Squadron was established at Salt Lake City Municipal Airport. They were equipped with F-51D Mustangs. Their mission was clear. It was the air defense of Utah. September 18, 1947 is its official birthdate.
Units of the Utah Air National Guard are Air Reserve Components. This is under the Air Force’s “Total Force” concept. The Air Force trains and equips them. They are operationally gained by a Major Command of the USAF if federalized.
The Utah Air National Guard plays a crucial role. It supports communities during crises. This includes earthquakes, floods, and civil disturbances. They stand ready to protect Utah. They also contribute to national security.
During the Korean War, Utah ANG pilots flew many missions. They flew F-51D Mustang fighter aircraft. One pilot, Capt. Cliff Jolley, became the first Air Guard “Ace.” He shot down seven enemy MiG-15s.
In 1990-91, Utah Air National Guard crews volunteered. They supported Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Their commitment continued well into 1991.
Since 9/11, over 3,300 members have been activated. They have deployed worldwide. They supported Operation Noble Eagle. They supported Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The primary mission of the 151st Wing is air refueling. They support major commands of the Air Force. They also support other US military forces and allied nations. The unit supports airlift missions too. They are also tasked with supporting nuclear strike missions.
The 109th Air Control Squadron manages air activities. They use radar and communication equipment. The 130th Engineering Installation Squadron handles communication systems. The 151st Intelligence provides intelligence support.
The Utah Air National Guard also benefits local communities. They participate in “Sub-for-Santa”. They conduct blood drives. They run an “Adopt a School Program”. They do highway cleanups. They supported the 2002 Winter Olympics. Utah Air Guardsmen assisted during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. They airlifted evacuees to safety in September 2005.
