Eleven battle stars. That’s how many the USS Yorktown earned in World War II alone. Can you imagine the bravery and skill it took to achieve that? Right here before us stands the mighty USS Yorktown a true legend of the sea.

This isn’t just a ship. This is the tenth aircraft carrier to serve in the United States Navy. Built between 1941 and 1943 she played a vital role in the Pacific Offensive. The Yorktown helped defeat Japan in 1945. This incredible vessel earned the Presidential Unit Citation for her service.

But the USS Yorktown’s story doesn’t end with World War II. After the war she was modernized. She got a new angled deck. This made it easier to handle jet aircraft. The ship was recommissioned in the early 1950s as an anti-submarine attack carrier. She served in the Pacific during the Vietnam War earning five more battle stars. One of her final and most remarkable missions involved recovering the Apollo 8 crew in 1968 after their historic trip to the moon.

Think about that for a moment. This ship was instrumental in a major war. She later played a crucial role in the space race. The USS Yorktown’s legacy is truly remarkable. She was decommissioned in 1970. Five years later she found a new home in Charleston Harbor.

More than just a war machine the USS Yorktown was also a movie star. The Academy Award-winning film The Fighting Lady was filmed on board. So was Tora! Tora! Tora! a movie that recreated the attack on Pearl Harbor.
