Have you ever noticed the quiet beauty of Usmate Velate, nestled in the Italian countryside? This comune, a municipality in the province of Monza and Brianza, holds a rich tapestry of history that stretches to the Roman era.

The journey began with a road – the Via Spluga, a major Roman thoroughfare that connected Milan to Lindau, Switzerland. This road, the backbone of trade and travel, passed right through Usmate, marking its place in the ancient world. Usmate was once known by a different name – Uocimate, a moniker that hints at its early presence.

Usmate was once a rural place, dotted with dense woodlands, the sound of rustling leaves the only music that filled the air. It was a world away from the bustling heart of Milan, a peaceful corner of the Brianza region. Life revolved around agriculture, the land providing sustenance and a quiet existence.

While Usmate had a church dedicated to Saint Zeno, it wasn’t recognized as an independent parish until the 16th century, when the influence of Saint Charles Borromeo bestowed this honor. This marked a new chapter in the town’s religious history, one that emphasized spiritual growth and community.

There were difficult times too. The legacy of the Osio family, feudal lords during the Spanish rule, is a chapter that paints a darker picture. Count Gian Paolo Osio, notorious for his crimes, was even linked to the infamous Nun of Monza, a figure mentioned by Alessandro Manzoni in the celebrated novel The Betrothed. Sadly, his castle in Usmate was destroyed in 1608, whispers of his misdeeds and the mystery of his disappearance forever tied to this place.

Usmate Velate wasn’t always one commune. This was a unity achieved in 1869, when Usmate, already an independent municipality, merged with Velate Milanese. It was around this time that the coat of arms, bearing the intertwined symbols of the powerful families who once held sway in Usmate Velate, was adopted.

Today, this municipality, a quiet blend of the past with a touch of modern life, welcomes visitors who seek a taste of history.
