From the ashes of a railway giant, the Usines Angus Shops rise again. Not as a place of clanging metal and steam-powered behemoths, but as a testament to Montreal’s resilience. The Usines Angus Shops, once the heart of Canadian Pacific Railway’s manufacturing prowess, now beat with a different rhythm. Established in 1904 and named after CPR founder Richard B. Angus, these shops sprawled across 1,240 acres, a bustling city within a city. At its peak, over 12,000 workers filled the 66 buildings, their lives intertwined with the rhythmic clang of hammers and the hiss of steam. The Usines Angus Shops weren’t just about trains. During World War II, these very grounds echoed with a different kind of urgency. The rhythmic production shifted from locomotives to Valentine tanks, destined for the Russian Army under the Lend-Lease program. The first tank rolled out on May 22, 1941, a symbol of Canada’s contribution to the war effort. The railway era eventually waned. In 1992, the Usines Angus Shops fell silent, the last echoes of industry fading into the Montreal air. But the story didn’t end there. The City of Montreal, recognizing the potential of this vast space, embarked on a massive redevelopment project. Nearly $500 million and years of work transformed the Usines Angus Shops. The old bones of the workshops were repurposed, reborn as trendy boutiques, bustling restaurants, and vibrant community spaces. The Technopôle Angus emerged, a shining example of urban renewal and sustainable development, breathing new life into the Rosemont neighborhood. While the roar of locomotives is gone, the spirit of innovation and industry lives on within the Usines Angus Shops.
